Transaction to Transformation: Why Experience is the Future of Filipino Retail
As MR.DIY marks its 1000th store milestone, MR.DIY Philippines’ CEO Roselle Andaya outlines a shift toward experience-driven retail and the industry’s role in nation-building

As we reach our 1000th store milestone at MR.DIY Philippines, I find myself reflecting not just on how far we’ve come—but on where retail is headed, and what our role should be in that future.

Reaching 1,000 stores is a milestone any retailer would be proud of. But for me, it has never been about the number alone. It represents the trust Filipino families have placed in us—and more importantly, the responsibility that comes with that trust.

And that responsibility is evolving.

Over the years, we have built our brand around accessibility, affordability, and everyday value. But today, it is clear to me that Filipino shoppers are looking for more than just price. They are looking for convenience. They are looking for ease. And increasingly, they are looking for experiences that feel intuitive and relevant to their daily lives.

This shift is shaping how I see the future of retail in the Philippines.

For a long time, our industry has been built around transactions—what customers buy, how much they spend, and how quickly they can complete a purchase. Those things will always matter. But they are no longer enough.

What matters now is how we transform everyday experiences.

It’s how a store can simplify a busy parent’s day.
How it can help a student prepare for school more efficiently.
How it can inspire someone to start a small project at home.

These may seem like small moments, but when multiplied across millions of customers, they become meaningful.

This thinking led us to introduce our first Elevated Experience Store at Ayala Malls Circuit, alongside our 1000th Store Milestone.

For us, this is not just a new store format—it is a new way of thinking about retail.

We asked ourselves a simple question: how do we make everyday shopping easier, more intuitive, and more meaningful for Filipinos?

The answer was not just in offering more products, but in designing better experiences.

In this store, we focused on reducing friction—through clearer layouts, more purposeful product groupings, and a more guided shopping journey. We want customers to not only find what they need faster, but also discover solutions they may not have thought about before.

And this is only the beginning.

As we move forward, our focus is not just on expanding our footprint, but on improving every store we operate. We are actively exploring how we can scale these improvements across more locations—so that more Filipino communities can benefit from a better retail experience.

Because for me, growth is no longer just about opening more stores. It is about elevating every store.
At the same time, I believe retail plays a much bigger role beyond the store itself.

Retail is deeply connected to nation-building.

It ensures communities have access to essential goods, supports families in managing their everyday lives, and it creates jobs and opportunities across the country.

With over 1,000 stores nationwide, I see this responsibility very clearly. Our presence allows us to be part of everyday life in a very real and tangible way.

That is why our direction is anchored on a simple but important idea: “Gusto Mong Buhay

For us, this is not just a campaign. It is a commitment—to continuously improve how we serve Filipino families, and to empower Filipinos to live the life they want.

Looking ahead, I believe the future of retail in the Philippines will be defined by three things: experience, accessibility, and relevance.

Price remains key–but what will truly differentiate brands is how well they understand people’s everyday needs and how effectively they respond to them.

At MR.DIY, we are committed to being part of that future.

Because when we improve everyday life—even in small ways—we are not just growing as a business. We are moving forward as a nation.
