Where We Invest Today Shapes How We Grow Tomorrow

By Roselle Marisol Belleza Andaya
Chief Executive Officer, MR.DIY Philippines
When companies talk about growth, the conversation often goes straight to numbers—stores opened, customers served, revenues generated, and markets entered.
Those numbers matter. But as business leaders, the more important question for us is not simply how much our company is growing, but how much value it gives our people and stories behind our progress.
This is how we see growth at MR.DIY. Growth is not simply about becoming bigger. It is about making the right investments today, and bringing people together to create value that lasts. Because when we collaborate—with our people, our partners, our communities, and other stakeholders—we create an impact that goes beyond the borders of our business and contributes to something bigger: shared value for our people, our communities, and the environment.
At MR.DIY Philippines, reaching our 1,000th store this year gave us an opportunity to reframe our approach on growth.
Our brand that started with one store in Balagtas, Bulacan in 2018, now has more than 1,000 stores across the country. But reaching this milestone does not make us think that we have “arrived”. If anything, it makes us think harder about what comes next.

Because when you have reached this scale, opening more stores is only one part of the growth equation.
The bigger challenge is sustaining an organization that can grow while becoming better at what it does.
That is where our investments are increasingly shifting to.
We invest in accessibility.
Our physical stores remain at the heart of our business.
For MR.DIY, accessibility is not simply about having a large store network. It is about being present where Filipino families live, work, study, and build their everyday lives.
Our expansion across Metro Manila, Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao has allowed us to bring affordable and practical solutions closer to more communities. With more than 18,000 products across categories ranging from household essentials and hardware to beauty, gadgets, toys, and lifestyle products, our role is to make everyday needs easier to address.
But as we continue expanding, we are also becoming more deliberate about how we grow.
The goal is not simply to have more stores.
The goal is to make every store matter.
We invest in customer experience.
One of the clearest examples of this shift is our first Elevated Experience Store, which we opened alongside our 1,000th-store milestone at Ayala Malls Circuit in Makati.
The investment here goes beyond interiors.
We looked closely at how Filipino families actually shop—how they move through a store, how they discover products, what makes navigation easier, and where we can remove friction from the shopping experience.
The result is a store with clearer navigation, improved lighting, lower gondola racks, simplified product zoning, and more purposeful category groupings.
For me, this represents an important change in mindset.
Growth is no longer just about expanding our footprint. It is about elevating the experience within that footprint.
And that mindset is something we intend to continue.
We invest in people.
No retail network of this size can be sustained by infrastructure alone.
Behind every store is a team of people making thousands of decisions every day—from keeping shelves stocked and stores operational to serving customers and responding to the needs of their communities.
As we grow, we therefore have to invest just as deliberately in our people, as we do in our stores and infrastructure.
That means developing leaders, strengthening capabilities, creating opportunities for our employees to grow, and building a culture where accountability and responsibility exist at every level of the organization.
To scale, leadership cannot sit only at the top.
It has to be distributed across the organization.
Our people are ultimately the ones who turn strategy into everyday execution. And when you operate across more than 1,000 locations, that execution is what determines whether growth can be sustained.
We invest in technology and the way we work.
Retail is also changing because customers are changing.
The customer journey today does not begin when someone walks through our doors. It begins with a search, a social media post, a recommendation, or a digital interaction.
For a predominantly physical retailer like MR.DIY, this does not mean replacing the store with digital channels.
It means using technology and data to make the physical experience more relevant.
We are looking at how digital tools, customer insights, and better information can help us understand what people need, improve how we operate, and make it easier for customers to find the right products and solutions.
Technology, for us, is an enabler.
The objective is not to be the better digital retailer.
It is to be a retailer that uses the right technology to serve people better.
We invest in sustainability.
Growth also creates responsibility.
As our footprint expands, we have to think about the environmental and social impact that comes with operating a large retail organization.
We strive to make sustainability embedded in the way we think about the business.
Our investments include renewable energy, responsible business practices, plastic recovery, and partnerships that help address environmental challenges.
In 2025, MR.DIY Philippines pioneered retail aggregation and shifted to 100% renewable energy through its partnership with ACEN Renewable Energy Solutions.
For us, sustainability is not simply an initiative that sits beside the business.
It is part of how we think about the business we want to build for the long term.
We invest in community.
This is the type of investment whose returns cannot always be captured immediately in financial statements.
As MR.DIY has grown, so has our responsibility to the communities that have welcomed us.
This year, alongside our 1,000th-store milestone, we entered into an Adopt-A-School partnership with HOPE and launched education initiatives designed to improve learning environments and bring STEM learning experiences closer to Filipino students.
These investments are guided by a reframed belief: business growth should create value beyond the business itself.
If we are going to be part of people's everyday lives, then we should also contribute to the communities in which those lives unfold.
That is what our purpose of “Gusto Mong Buhay” means to us.
It is about helping Filipinos build the life they want—not only through affordable and accessible products, but also by being a responsible member of the communities we serve.
Building what comes next.
When I look at where MR.DIY is putting its resources today, I see a common thread.
We are investing in the things that make growth stronger.
We invest in stores because accessibility matters.
We invest in experience because customers deserve better than simply a transaction.
We invest in people because scale requires capable, diverse, and empowered teams.
We invest in technology because the way people shop and work continues to evolve.
We invest in sustainability because growth has to be responsible.
And we invest in communities because the success of a business should ultimately be connected to the progress of the people it serves.
Reaching 1,000 stores is something we are proud of. But I see it less as a finish line and more as a point of reflection.
The first chapter of our growth was about building our presence across the Philippines.
The next chapter is about building the capabilities, experiences, people, and partnerships that will allow us to grow with greater purpose.
At MR.DIY, we believe the future of growth is not simply bigger.
It is more sustainable, more inclusive, and more meaningful for the people we serve.
